Sustainable development in the Arctic, especially in the mining, requires a multifaceted approach to legal framework, environmental best practices, social impact and acceptance as well as economic development. Greenland never extracted uranium but currently is experiencing a growing interest in exploration and exploitation of radioactive mineral resources.

In continuation of the last two years intensive competence development project at DCE — Danish Centre for Environment and Energy and at Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR), the proposed activity aim to establish a radiation unit laboratory at DCE, equipped with an alpha spectrometer for the purpose of analysis of low level naturally occurring radionuclides in environment, research and development.

In the arctic region, recently only uranium related exploration activities have been carried out in Canada (Kiggavik Project), Finland, Sweden, Norway and Greenland and no uranium is currently produced. Currently, there is much interest in possible future exploitation of radioactive minerals in the Arctic.

In 2013, the Greenland Self Government lifted the so-called zero-tolerance policy thus opening up Greenland's vast uranium reserves for extraction. For decades, DCE have provided research-based advisory to the Greenland authorities on environmental issues. In the future, DCE shall deliver science-based advisory to the Greenland Government on the environmental aspects of such uranium production activities, e.g. at Kvanefjeld. However, currently no instruments for measuring radiation exist at BIOS, which limit the ability of BIOS to provide research-based advice on radiation issues.
