SKV4 Wood Chips - Bypass heat exchanger

DONG Energy Thermal Power A/S

Introduction:
DONG Energy Thermal Power is planning to implement district heating production based on biofuels through erection of a number of wood-chip boilers, providing steam for existing steam turbine and/or stand alone district heating condenser. Two to four boilers are envisaged as an add-on to the existing gas fired plant, Skærbækværket. The new biomass fired boilers shall deliver up to 320 MW heat to the district heating system. It is envisaged that the new boiler plant shall have a capacity of maximum 280 MW and the remaining 40 MW will be provided by flue gas condensers.
Bypass condenser:
In normal operation, the steam will be fed to the existing turbine. It will also be possible to operate the whole plant only producing heat through turbine by-pass operation to a stand-alone condenser. The heat will be transferred to the district heating system. The by-pass condenser must be able to condense the entire steam flow (maximum 96kg/s) from the wood-chip boilers. The steam to the condenser is fed directly from the HP steam pipe (82 bar, 540° C) between the wood-chip boilers and the existing turbine via a turbine bypass control valve with water injection and a quick closing valve. The condensate from the condenser will be pumped back directly to the feed water tank which has a temperature of approximately 120 - 140° C.
District heating side
Supply temperature 100°C
