Framework Agreement concerning large plastic topmark buoys

Danish Maritime Authority

The plastic topmark buoys must be designed for being used as floating aids to navigation in Danish waters at water depths between 6 and 15 metres and currents up to 5 knots, including being capable of resisting the ice loads that would occur in Danish inlets under normal conditions. The buoys must have guaranteed minimum life must be 8 years, and meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Main dimensions:
- Length – max 6,0m, min 4,0m
- Diameter in the waterling – max 1,0 m, min 0,7 m
- Height above the waterline – min 2 m
- Projected side area above the waterline - 1.5 m2
2. Be either conical, rotationally moulded topmark buoys or tubular topmark buoys
3. Meet IALA Recommendation, E-108 (On the Surface Colours used as Visual Signals on Aids to Navigation, Edition 2, December 2009)
4. Be fitted with retroreflecting bands in accordance with IALA Recommendation E-106 (On the Use of Retroreflecting Material on Aids to Navigation Marks within the IALA Maritime Buoyage System, Edition 1.1, December 2005)
5. Be delivered with built-in radar reflectors. The effective radar cross section (RCS) of the topmark buoys must, as a minimum, be 10 m2
6. Be fitted with a lifting point and be able to be lifted with a crane. The lifting point must be close to the top of the topmark buoy, capable of tolerating a pull of at least 20 kN without the topmark buoy being permanently deformed or damaged in any way
7. Moor with a chain and have sufficient internal ballast to stand properly upright under the following conditions:
- Ø 26 mm, 45 meters mooring chain at a water depth of 15 m.
- Ø 30 mm, 30 meters mooring chain at a water depth of 10 m.
- Ø 40 mm, 18 meters mooring chain at a water depth of 6 m.
8. The internal diameter of the mooring point must be at least 50 mm. The mooring point must be able to tolerate a pull of at least 20 kN without the topmark buoy or the mooring point being permanently deformed or damaged in any way
9. The fitting for topmarks must be able to tolerate a sideways load of 500 Nm in any direction as well as a vertical (upwards) pull of 500 N without the arrangement being permanently deformed or the fitting loosening from the topmark buoy
10. The filling of the buoy must be freon-free and of the highest quality closed-cell specification to prevent water absorption (maximum 5 per cent).
